The annual South African Longboard Surfing Championships was hosted in Mossel Bay from the 25th April - 1st May 2016.

This is the biggest single surfing contest in South Africa. The championships have been running for more than 26 years.

Andrew Marriott, a lecturer in the Department of Marketing Management, was selected as part of the Eastern Province Longboard Surfing team to represent the region at the champs. More than 200 surfers from age 11 yrs to 69 yrs, across 16 Longboard surfing divisions, took part in the event.

Andrew surfed in the senior men's division and placed 8th after being knocked out in the quarter finals. The standard of surfing was excellent, with many past and current World and SA champions taking part. The Eastern Province Longboard Surfing team had an eventful time with no less than six winners and placing second to Western Province in the team trophy. Although numerous surfboards were broken as a result of the long period swell wrapping around into the bay, there were fortunately no serious injuries sustained during the seven days of the contest.
