The prestigious Annual Financial Planning and Investment Seminar in association with Sanlam was held at the NMMU Conference Centre on the North Campus on Wednesday 27 August 2014. This event, a highlight in the calendar of the School of Management Sciences, was hosted by Mrs Jackie Palframan of the Financial Planning programmes. The Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economic Sciences, Prof Niekie Dorfling,  welcomed the 120 delegates from Sanlam, NMMU  and  students from the Financial Planning programme and Investment Honours class. Prof Dorfling outlined the growth and development of the financial planning programmes as a successful addition to the range of qualifications within the Faculty’s education programme offering.

Mr Arthur Kamp, economist from Sanlam Investment Management was invited to provide the keynote address for the evening. His talk titled Economics, Investments and Fortune Tellers was very well received and gave an insight into the role of the economist within an investment management team. Mr Kamp highlighted the need to seek fair value of assets rather than to predict outcomes in the market which are not possible to foretell. He noted the need to construct portfolios which are diverse and robust to face the unpredictability of the markets and market sentiment.

The evening concluded with networking over refreshments and a light meal. This annual event has been running successfully for over a decade, providing an opportunity to showcase the programmes offered by the NMMU and to enable the Sanlam advisors and NMMU students to listen to a respected speaker.
