The School of Management Sciences Family Business Unit was proud to host renowned world-class speaker and researcher, Professor Saras Sarasvathy, from Darden School of Business, University of Virginia.

Prof Sarasvathy is an Isidore Horween Research Associate Professor at the University of Virginia’s Darden Business School. She received her Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University while working with 1978 Nobel Laureate in Economics, Herbert Simon. A leading scholar on the cognitive basis for high-performance entrepreneurship, Sarasvathy serves as advisor to entrepreneurship programmes in Europe and Asia.

Prof Sarasvathy’s award-winning research is explained in Effectuation: Elements of Entrepreneurial Expertise. Effectuation is a rigorous framework for understanding how entrepreneurs starting with very few resources can nonetheless create enduring ventures with high economic and social impact.

Professor Sarasvathy presented a two day writing workshop on: “Writing for world-class academics”. During the workshop she tackled problems related to the research and writing process. She also discussed problems plaguing new researchers. Professor Sarasvathy discussed her research journey with delegates and how she determined effectuation to be a viable method for entrepreneurship.

We are proud that the NMMU could host a world-class academic such as herself as she provided academics and entrepreneurs with valuable and practical insights.
