We would like to extend our congratulations to Osmond Caerwyn Spence , who was named as the top achiever for the BCom Financial Planning programme in the Department of Business Management at the April 2023 awards ceremony.

Osmond was motivated to study financial planning because he had always had an interest in finance, macroeconomics, and how people and businesses can best manage their money.

During his time as a student, Osmond stated that the most significant challenge he faced was group work. Especially due to the nature of online learning, it was challenging to arrange group work with people he had never met before. What made this even more challenging was that the group work had to be organised over platforms such as Teams meetings and WhatsApp chats, and not in person. However, although it was challenging, he found it very rewarding to learn how to work in groups with strangers and still successfully manage to submit good quality assignments.

In order to successfully manage academic demands in relation to his other responsibilities, Osmond found that it was important to prioritise what work was more important at the present moment and what work would be important in the future. This was supported through a process of drawing up a rough schedule of activities and deadlines of when each task or activity had to be completed by.

One of the most valuable lessons that Osmond learnt during his time as a student, was how to figure out his academic challenges and problems on his own. In addition to this he also learnt to develop a healthy working habit as well as the ability of organising group work with people he had never met before.

When asked what advice he would offer to other students who are looking get the most out of their university experience, Osmond emphasised that it is vital to choose a course in which they find the work interesting.

Currently, Osmond is furthering his studies at Nelson Mandela University and doing his Post Graduate Diploma in Financial Planning whilst working as an intern at a financial planning firm.
